TC: You had me at 'hold' (Episode I). What's it like learning all of the hip LARPing terminology?
MZ: It was loads of fun -- like I said, I was already a bit familiar with some of the terminology from my stint with Dungeons & Dragons (like XP equals experience points, for example). Collectively, we Damsels were loving the new vocabulary we were getting to add to our arsenal. That's the kind of stuff that really helps us get into character and bring the scenarios to life.
TC: Did all of the damsels immerse themselves in real LARP experience before delving into these roles? If so, at what game?
MZ: Unfortunately, as much as we'd have loved to, we didn't have too much time between our rehearsal and shooting schedule. We did do lots of research, including watching the documentary on LARPing, Monster Camp which was super helpful. It gave us a great insight into the inner workings of a Seattle-based LARPing group, NERO. We learned a lot from it actually.
TC: Did you know about/hear about LARP before signing on to this project?
EC: America is one of the founders of the Feel Good Film Festival here in Los Angeles. A documentary was submitted to her festival called Monster Camp. I haven't seen it yet, but I have heard it's a must-see. I think that was what grabbed America and April's attention. America has this love for all things awkward and interesting, plus she has a deep respect and admiration for people who do their own thing despite what the world might think of them. [As it turns out, April] feels the same way. It was pretty much a chain reaction at that point. I LARPed for the first time when I was sixteen, then got hooked on the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism).
