KR: What are some of the things you learned (in terms of sewing, construction, and technique) from attempting The Mistress of Pain?

LT: Prior to The Mistress of Pain costume, I'd never constructed a dress of that magnitude. I learned a lot about the patterns involved to make the dress, special considerations as to fabric allowances and what type of fabrics looked good. With regards to fabric allowances, in order to keep costs down, instead of making a full dress, I made layers that when put together appear to be a complete dress; the exception being the use of tulle, I learned that whatever you think you need in that fabric, make it double. In the grand scheme of constructing this dress, it was truly all about improvising.

In addition to the little tricks I figured out, I also learned a lot about beading, and detailing on the dress; in other words, what looked good and what didn't. I found that even though the concept art called for a great deal of gray shades and black color, I could accent with gold to really make the costume "pop."

KR: What kind of make-up did you use for the costume?

LT: For any body painting I only use Kryolan brand Aquacolor cake makeup. It's not terribly expensive, can be found online and is the most durable makeup I've ever come across. It doesn't rub off and comes off with soap and water. With other details, I use a small amount of grease makeup and black lipstick.
