The internet has been buzzing about some serious issue plaguing the 2010 Hurricane Who convention. Hurricane Who is a Central Florida (USA) Doctor Who convention scheduled for October, 2010. However, the convention has been dealing with a series of guest cancellations, and financial restructuring that now has put the convention in jeopardy.
Rumblings had apparently originated on the Gallifrey Base message boards. In early April, the following message was posted (re-posting here in full because the board requires registration just to view the forums):
"Dear All,
With great regret I am posting this to inform you loyal fans that Hurricane Who might not happen this year. Jarrod Cooper has several unpaid debts from last year (my fee included) and it is seriously jeopardising the next event. So those of you who are contemplating booking flights and hotel rooms just hold off for now... When Jarrod returns my phone calls/emails/messages I shall have more to tell you, but as of two weeks ago he has become impossible to get hold of, so you now know as much as I do. Love to you all, I'm sure I shall see you at some point, sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.
Louise Jameson."
Subsequent posts involved many saying they were saddened by the developments, but also that many had reached out to offer their assistance to Jarrod Cooper, the organizer of the convention. Also revealed on the forums was the resignation of the Volunteer Coordinator. The longer there was no word from Jarrod Cooper, the more tempers began to flair on the boards, and subsequent comparisons to the "JumpCon fiasco" were made. (JumpCon was a convention that folded and saw the organizer prosecuted for various charges. Many people and guests lost a lot of money as a result.)
