Heroscape Discontinued?

Back in 2004, Hasbro released a game that showed the world just how fun a three dimensional board could be with their hit game Heroscape. The game story was simple enough, group of warriors from different worlds and dimensions gather on this plane to do battle to the finish. This simplicity is what allowed the game to sell so well when it first hit store shelves, not to mention the mind-blowing board design. Sadly though, their reign could not last as Wizards of the Coast eventually got control of the property and then put their own Dungeons and Dragons property into the game which according to most players is what drove people from the game to the point of it being cancelled.
Earlier this week Wizards sent out an announcement saying that they were discontinuing their Heroscape brand. They will still be releasing their last expansion Moltenclaw’s Invasion which I assume will release soon due to their announcement of Heroscape’s future. Wizards also confirmed that they will continue to sell Heroscape product as long as it remains available. Fans of the series will want to hurry and pick up those remaining expansions their missing until the day comes where this game inevitably vanishes forever.
Wizards of the Coast claimed that they made this decision so that they can focus on their bigger brand names such as Magic: the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons. In my opinion this is a smart move on their part seeing as though both of those properties are what made the company what it is today. However, it does come as a shock that Heroscape never made it up there as their main board game; especially considering they always had a huge display for it at Gencon and what seemed like huge tournaments and constantly packed demo booths. Perhaps the player base wasn’t as big as it seemed then, so now all we can do is watch as the game takes its last breathes.
