The uniforms in Star Trek are some of the most recognizable costumes at conventions, especially since the latest Star Trek film was such a massive summer blockbuster back in 2009. Fans are clamoring for Star Trek costume resources for their upcoming conventions, and The Convention Fans Blog and Alltern8 are here to help!
Of course, with over 11 movies, 6 television series, alternate universes, comic books, and an upcoming Star Trek MMO game, there is no shortage of Star Trek uniforms to choose from. To make it easier, I’ve divided these uniforms into difficulty level. The first level (newbies) will involve store bought uniforms only. The medium level will involve using official patterns to create your own. And the third level, the "OMG what have I gotten myself into" level, involves creating your own pattern and having very little in the way of reference material.
Starfleet Uniforms for Newbies
One of the benefits to a smash hit movie coming out is that plenty of official costumes get licensed. Rubies is the company putting out the official Star Trek 2009 movie costumes. The official line offers the men’s Star Trek 2009 movie tunics in the three department colors (red, blue, gold). It also offers an Uhura style uniform for women. However, there are no blue or gold variations in this style. These costumes are available at most online and costume store retailers. You can also lately find them at sci-fi conventions.
In addition to the new movie uniforms, you can also purchase pre-made official uniforms based on Star Trek: The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. These can be a bit harder to find, but online retailers like Intergalactic Trading Company, Warp One, and Roddenberry.com tend to keep some in stock. For men, the uniform typically includes the shirt only (not pants). You’ll find you typically have to buy your own combadge and insignia as well.
If you want a pre-made costume for any of the less popular or more complex uniforms, you’ll need to head on over to eBay or find someone to make one for you. There aren’t any official Wrath of Khan, Enterprise, or Motion Picture pre-made uniforms for sale. However, there are many talented costumers out there who make them.
