Rod Roddenberry Giving Away and Auctioning off Roddenberry Family Items
Rod Roddenberry, the son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry, is giving away and auctioning off several items that belonged to his famous parents. Last week, Rod started with a set of Lifetime WWII history books that belong to his dad. He posted on Twitter that he was giving them away. Oddly enough, I was actually the first to respond, and now then are en route. But the giveaway didn't end there.
Throughout this past weekend, Rod posted several more items, including a TNG jacket, a Minette Viewer Editor, Gene's 1997 Chia Award and Majel's Sci-Fi Channel award, along with Gene's Bel Air Country Club Membership card.
He then announced that several more items would be auctioned off to benefit Haitian relief. Some of the first items posted included one of Gene's old driver's licenses, a set of James Bond novels, a hat, a TNG script belonging to Majel, one of Majel's golf bags, golf clubs, and some new Star Trek movie swag signed by JJ Abrams.
Rod has said more items will be posted throughout the week. But as some fans have asked: why is he giving all of this stuff away?
Rod's answer?
"Just so everyone knows, I'm giving these items away b/c I've sold the family house and am moving out. There are many wonderful sentimental things that I'm keeping... however there is 70 years worth that I simply cannot take with me. I can't bring myself to throw it away and if it should go anywhere, it should go to the people who truly admire my mother and father as I do."
The giveaway items are being handled on a first come, first serve bases. Auction items are available for bid until January 29th, 2010 @ 11:59 pm PST. Both are being done via Rod's facebook page (although originally he was also using Twitter).
