Convention Fans:
Now That Garrett Wang is Running Dragon*con's Trek Track...
Now that Garrett Wang is running Dragon*con's Trek Track, I'd like to put it out there that it'd be really cool to have a Star Trek: Voyager reunion for Dragon*con 2010. We're already part of the way there, with Robbie Duncan McNeill and Garrett Wang in attendance.
Wait, you haven't heard? Yes, Garrett Wang, who played Ensign Harry Kim on Star Trek: Voyager, is the new director for Star Trek programming at Dragon*con beginning with this year. He's replacing 17-year veteran director Eric Watts. Eric's departure was met with mixed emotions by attendees, and some fans are already speculating as to whether Eric was fired in order to make room for Garrett Wang. Nothing is confirmed of course, and it probably never will be (which just leaves the typical wild speculation on forums and social networks, speculation that will no doubt remain for years to come). But, what's done is done.
That being said, I have always had wonderful experiences with Garrett at conventions, whether at a low key con like Chiller Theatre Expo, or a large convention like Dragon*con. He has consistently been gracious and kind to his fans. If I had to pick a Star Trek actor to take on the job as Star Trek programming director, Garrett Wang would definitely be at the top of my list.
A quick story about meeting Garrett for the first time:
My mother drove me out to Star Trek Day at Kennedy Space Center back in 1998, which was my first real “convention” like experience. Garrett was one of the guests. I remember that all of the guest events were held in the Kennedy Space Center’s Apollo-Saturn V Center, which houses an actual Saturn V rocket. Garrett’s autograph line stretched the length of the building. I found out later that he stayed until everyone who had wanted an autograph got one. Garrett clearly loves his fans, and you can see that the moment you meet him.
