Hurricane Who: Category Two - A Doctor Who Sci-Fi Convention in Orlando (USA)
Hurricane Who is a Doctor Who convention held in Orlando, Florida (USA). This year, it is happening October 29 through October 31, 2010 at the Doubletree Resort Orlando hotel. Hurricane Who is run by a fan group that organizes ‘Doctor Who’ events in the Orlando, Florida area, and 2010 marks the second year for the convention.
Guests for the 2010 Hurricane Who: Category Two convention include: James Moran (Writer; Doctor Who, Torchwood), Laura Doddington (Actress; Big Finish), Tony Lee (Writer; IDW Comics), Tammy Garrison (Head Writer; Acclaimed Online Comic Torchwood Babiez), Colin Baker (“Doctor Who #6”; Doctor Who), and Frazer Hines (“Jamie McCrimmon”; Doctor Who).
Getting Colin Baker is a great catch for this convention. Running a USA convention based on a UK franchise can make it considerably difficult to secure guests, especially the "big names." And almost all of the doctors are considered big names.
The convention, as previously mentioned, is being held at the Doubletree Resort Orlando hotel. There is a discount on rooms for convention attendees. Rooms are $95 a night plus tax. There is no additional fee for an extra adult in a room. The rate includes complimentary high-speed internet and self parking. The hotel has a few different food options, including the Bamboo Grille, Bangli (a lounge), Maxi's Deli, and the Red Parrot Pool Bar.
Tickets are currently available for purchase for Hurricane Who: Category Two. A full weekend adult pass is $55. There are no prices listed for single day entry or for youths.
Dealer room tables are still available for the convention. A table is $175.00, with an extra table running $125.00, and an extra dealer badge running $45.00. Fan tables are just $50. Dealers tables are 8 feet by 20 inches. You get one badge per table. Each fan table is 8 feet by 20 inches, but they do not include membership to the convention. Fan organizations that wish to sell copyrighted materials must purchase a dealers table.
Convention organizers will be holding smaller Doctor Who events between now and the convention, called "Hurricane Parties." Parties are typically held at Cricketers Arms, a local British Pub. These parties can include anything from guest appearances to fans hanging out and watching "Doctor Who" on a really big screen. According to organizers, the events are "casual, relaxed, and lots of fun." Some of the Hurricane Party guests have included Sylvester McCoy, Gareth David-Lloyd, Frazer Hines, John Leeson, Laura Doddington, Terrance Dicks, and Jackie Hodgson.

Also, Colin Baker is not appearing due to professional commitments. Because I know a staff person who left Hurricane Who because of what was considered to be financial mismanagement, I know that Mr. Lee's story is true. Wait till the convention happens and buy your ticket at the door. It's just not safe to buy ahead of time on this one.
