Hogwartz Slytherin Costume (photo by Louis Mattei)Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 is slated to come out in November 2010, which means you have plenty of time between now and then to get a great Hogwartz cosplay costume together! Now is the time of year to start working on a Hogwartz costume, because the closer we get to Halloween and the movie release, the harder it will be to get the various costume pieces you will need. All the big online retailers will be scrambling to fill orders in the months leading up to both.

What I love about creating a Hogwartz cosplay costume is that you can quite easily have one that is generic student #184, or you can have one specifically tailored after a particular character (such as Harry, or Luna Lovegood). What you decide to go for is entirely up to you, and how much time and/or money you have to throw at the project.

The first thing you're going to need for your Hogwartz costume is a robe. If you'd like to try your hand at making some your robes yourself, there are several online guides available. Servant’s of the Light’s website, for example, offers a list of patterns you can adapt to create the robes, along with written instructions and diagrams.

Of course, not everyone has the time or talent to make their own. But never fear, young wizard-to-be. There are several online retailers that sell wonderfully accurate Hogwartz robes. I have purchased robes from Whimsic Alley, one of the more well known Harry Potter costume retailers (they also have an actual store in Los Angeles, California). They offer robes with the colored lining (from the later movies) at a price of $119.99 - $135.00.

When it comes to getting the classic Hogwartz sweater, I also recommend Whimsic Alley. This isn't something you want to bother with trying to create yourself really. Their line of sweaters features 5 house colors, 3 styles, and 13 sizes - certainly one of the more extensive sweater collections out there.

I can't wait!!! :) Thanks for the tip about the shoes. Those will work well for a costume and in general. Great photo, btw!
