Review:
The Story Thus Far--The New Spider-Woman Series

In September 2009, Marvel finally released the long delayed Spider-Woman #1, launching an ongoing series by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Their run on Daredevil was wildly popular and has been said to be the best of the best of any Daredevil story. When this series was first announced, I was planning on reading it. But this was before the horrible ending to Secret Invasion and the rather boring Dark Reign. So I wrote it off. Actually I totally forgot about it as I seemed to disappear from the release schedule all together.

So come July and I saw the re-solicitation, I rolled my eyes and thought, "Yeah right." I was in major Bendis burnout, no longer reading anything he wrote wishing that Marvel would bring someone new in to revamp the whole universe and take it in a new direction.

When Spider-Woman #1 came out, I didn't add it to my pile, even though I had starting reading some Marvel titles again. I think I said "BLARF" when I walked by it on the stands. But then people started telling me how good it was. My buddy Wyatt kept on me about it, "you need to read this, it's really good." So finally I broke down and read it. Four issues later, it's one of the titles I look forward to the most, right behind Blackest Night. Yeah, I said it. It's one of my favorite series now. It seems Bendis has things on the right track again as nearly all his titles I'm enjoying. So let's jump into the issues out so far.

Spider-Woman #1-4

In Spider-Woman #1, we find Jessica Drew in a bad place. For years, the skrull queen has been masquerading as her and even though her fellow heroes know it wasn't actually her, most just can't get over it.  They just can't be comfortable around her, except for maybe Wolverine. Along comes Agent Abigail Brand of S.W.O.R.D. which is like S.H.I.E.L.D. but in space. They dropped the ball when it came to the Skrull Invasion and now they are offering Jessica a chance at redemption and revenge, a purpose in her purposeless life. And what is she offering? To hunt down and kill all the remaining skrulls. A job she takes armed with a special agent super secret phone and armband that identifies skrulls, Jessica is off to Mandripoor.
