Review: Green Lantern Corps #43 (Blackest Night)

Date: 17 Dec 2009
I really only have two words for this issue: TOTALLY AWESOME!

Green Lantern Corps #42 left us with the cliffhanger of Kyle Rayner giving his life to take out a bunch of the Black Lanterns. Issue 43 picks up directly after that as Guy Gardner and Natu race to Kyle's side. Kyle's ring attempts to return to Mogo which only upsets Guy even more and as his rage takes over, slain Red Lantern Vice's ring seeks him out. Now armed with two rings and rage to match Atrocitus, Guy goes on this amazing rampage through the Black Lanterns, laying waste to all in his path. Having both rings in his possession, Guy can actually kill the Black Lanterns. These fight scenes are amazing and I am again reminded how great an artist Patrick Gleason really is.

So as Guy goes on his rampage, Natu and the Indigo Lantern attempt to bring Kyle back life before the black rings can claim him as a member of their corps. We also get some creepy interactions between the Star Sapphire and Yellow Lantern Kryb as she finally finds her "children" now members of the Black Lantern Corps. Yikes! Undead babies! By far, the Green Lantern Corps has been the most disturbing of the Black Lantern issues, the most horror movie like.

Hearing Natu's heartbreak, the Star Sapphire races to their sides as Red Lantern Guy Gardner meets up with Kryb in an epic battle that you simply cannot miss.

So are the combine efforts of the Corps enough to bring Kyle back to life before he is completely lost and becomes a Black Lantern? Well you'll have to read the issue to find out. You'll also want to see the last page of this issue as Green Lantern "reinforcements" arrive.

At least he wasn't the Wonder Twins, but Aquaman got more love than Green Lantern on that show. Thankfully, my friend explained why Green Lantern is so cool. I mean, having the power to create anything you can imagine... that's pretty awesome stuff. Obviously, the more imaginative the person, the better, and that was my main concern going in to this movie -- that the things the writers came up with for Green Lantern to create wouldn't be that creative.
