Review:
Mutant Mayhem--X-Men Second Coming #1 and X-Force #25!

Be sure to check out my book of the week: Blackest Night #8 here.  As for my other favorite book of the week:

X-Men Second Coming #1
Back in my review for the X-Men Second Coming Preview, I talked about how the little story in there gave me high hopes for the newest X-Men crossover event. I happy to say that the first issue didn't fail to impress. The exact opposite actually, the issue was completely awesome. From the get go, it's full of intense action as Cable and Hope return to our time and are immediately attacked by Bastion's forces. Cyclops splits his X-Men in specific strike teams (the Namor part is hilarious) in an attempt to protect and recover Cable and Hope. It's written by my favorite dynamic duo writing team of Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle (who are responsible for my favorite X-book X-Force) with art by David Finch. Finch's art here is amazing, he looks enough like old Marc Silvestri to give me that feel of the X-Men during the Fall of the Mutants and Inferno days but still has his own style so not to be a Silvestri-clone. Honestly, this is some of the best work of his career. The whole fight scene on the highway was just epically awesome. I can't wait for the next part of this book to see where they take the story and which X-Man dies.

X-Force #25
A satisfying end to a mediocre storyline, X-Force #25 is the final chapter in the Necrosha X crossover. Selene has used the souls of the resurrected techno-organic infected mutants to ascend to godhood. It's a pretty simple ending as X-Force paints themselves in the ashes of the dead--to protect themselves from Selene--and go head to head with her. A lot of great action as the members of X-Force take on Selene's inner circle. I don't think I'm giving too much away by saying they've won. The most interesting page is the final one which depicts Cyclops and Wolverine discussing the future of X-Force as some team members are leaving, others are still in and one Wolverine will no longer allow to be a part of. So we're looking at a new team line-up as series creators Yost and Kyle leave the writing duties of this book after the Second Coming crossover. I really hope the replacement can continue how great this series is, I'd really hate it to rush quickly into cancelation. It's been my favorite X-Book for a while and it would be a shame to see it crash and burn.

That's it for the week, comic book wise. It was rather small but we got some of my favorite issue in a long time. I will be posting a graphic novel review for the High Soft Lisp by Gilbert Hernandez and a reading guide to X-Men Second Coming in the next few days so check back!
