Matt's Top 5 Anticipated New Comics for Summer 2010

Written By: Matt Reynolds

Way back at the end of last year (crazy we're already halfway through this year!), I did my top ten most anticipated comics for 2010. As we head into the summer months, I thought I'd take a second and have a small update of sorts. Below are the newly announced comics that weren't around for that top ten list. It's stuff that's coming out in the next couple months that looks really cool, the new comics that I'm most looking forward to.

1. Scarlet by Brian Michel Bendis and Alex Maleev (Marvel/Icon)

This book was first announced (or at least I first came across it) in the last issue of Spider-Woman. I was pretty disappointed that Spider-Woman was ending because Bendis and Maleev were doing stellar work on the book. However, the announcement for Scarlet made me excited--a new Bendis/Maleev book under Marvel's creator-owned imprint Icon--a place where they can do anything they want. My favorite Bendis books have always been his creator owned books such as Powers and Goldfish. Scarlet is a story about a woman pushed to the edge by all that is wrong with the world...a woman who decides to stand up and fight back and perhaps start a new American revolution. Sign me up--issue #1 hits in July!

2. Casanova by Matt Fraction, Gabriel Ba & Fabio Moon (Marvel/Icon)

Hey look! Another Marvel/Icon book. This one is by Invincible Iron Man and Uncanny X-Men scribe Matt Fraction and Umbrella Academy and Daytripper duo Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon! Casanova was originally put out through Image starting back in 2006--way before Fraction's success at Marvel and Ba's success with Umbrella Academy. I had missed it the first time around, but I always thought it looked great--the story of morally flexible and terminally directionless super spy Casanova Quinn as he get abducted across space and time. The series re-starts in July with two four issue arcs reprinting the series first two storylines before continuing with the new third volume. The reprints are fully remastered and are now full color! They also each also have a bonus story by Matt Fraction and Fabio Moon!
