Press Release:
DC Comics Announces Brightest Day!

Written By: Matt Reynolds
Date: 11 Jan 2010

Over on the DC Comics blog The Source, Dan DiDio announced the first series in post-Blackest Night DCU called "The Brightest Day." All I can say is--wait you mean the DC Universe survives? Now the story is ruined! All kidding aside Brightest Day is a 26 issue bi-weekly series starting with an issue 0 in April. The maxi-series will be written by the Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi with art yet to be announced. DiDio also referred to this as "DC Rebirth," following in the tradition of Green Lantern Rebirth and Flash Rebirth. Those two series revitalized both Hal Jordan and Barry Allen as major characters in the DC Universe.

Many of the DCU books will have a "Brightest Day" banner letting us know which of the DC regular titles are key to the story. Those titles will include both Green Lantern and Green Lantern Corps, the new Flash ongoing (also by Geoff Johns with art by Francis Manapul), and Justice League of America as well as others not announced. I can't imagine the number of books Johns will be writing in 2010. That guy must never sleep.

Another book spawning out of the Brightest Day will be the all new Titans series lead by Deathstroke of all people with Cheshire and the Tattooed Man as announced team members. Wait, a super villain Titans team? Isn't that the Secret Six book? The new Titans series will start with the Titans: Villains for Hire Special by Eric Wallace and Fabrizio Fiorentino (who worked on the Tattooed Man mini-series Final Crisis Aftermath Ink) before heading to do the creative work on the Titans regular series.

So with the above teaser picture of a White Lantern logo overtaking the Black Lantern logo, are we actually getting White Lanterns? Or is it just symbolism for the light overcoming the black. Is the cover to Justice League of America #44 a White Lantern? Or is Dove joining the team? I guess we'll have to wait to find out for sure. If it is White Lanterns, will we have all the other corps anymore? Will they all become White Lanterns? I can't see that working for long if so. Maybe we'll just get a few key people being White Lanterns. Maybe the resurrected heroes recently turned into Black Lanterns? Geoff John's first Green Lantern story after Blackest Night is called "The New Guardians," perhaps the leads of the all the corps are the White Lanterns.  I'm still holding out hope for a White Lantern G'Nort, but I somehow doubt that will happen. Comment below and let me know what your theories are. Regardless, I'm pretty excited for post-Blackest Night DCU.
