Comics That Will Make You Smarter

Comics aren't all caped crusaders and mutant violence. Sure a rousing roof-top brawl or fasted paced chase through the city streets is entertaining but comic readers are short changing themselves and their medium by thinking that only thing comic books are good for is mind-numbing entertainment. The industry has changed, and so have the comics hitting bookshelves. Even the major publishers have started to pick-up on more high-brow storytelling and artwork, taking comics to a whole new level. While the Internet is allowing more and more creators to shine with thought provoking webcomics ditching the old ZAM! BAM! POW! of the days of old. Below is a list comics, both in print and online, that do more than just entertain, they make you think, and are thus worth checking out:

The Unwritten- Alright so maybe this is a given, but for the select few out there who still haven't caught on to this ground breaking series what are you doing? Mike Carey takes readers on an incredible journey across the landscape of some of the greatest literary works known today, and maybe a few that have been forgotten. It's on the ballot for this year's Eisner's, but the best part about this series is that at barely twelve issues it's just getting started.
