X-Force / Cable : Messiah War #1 (Kyle & Yost/Choi & Oback)

Date: 10 Apr 2009
This comic begins with seven pages of exposition before the action starts (broken up with three pages of dialogue) and ends with eight pages of character descriptions.  Despite this, I still had to consult Wikipedia and draw a family tree before I could figure out exactly what was going on.  The words "continuity heavy" don't even begin to cover it.
Where to start? In 2005, the House of M cross-over event climaxed with Scarlet Witch reducing the mutant population of the Earth from millions to less than two hundred with three words: "No more mutants."  In the 2007 Messiah Complex storyline, a baby is born, the first mutant child since this Decimation.  She is repeatedly kidnapped by what seems like half the Marvel Universe before Cable takes Hope (I'm afraid so) into the future, chased by Bishop.  Bishop wants to avert the dystopia future he was born into by killing Hope, who he believes will cause this future.  Cyclops sends X-Force, the X-Men's "black ops" team, after them.
It's complex and ridiculous, but the action moves so fast that you won't care, unless you're the sort of person who gets annoyed by (e.g.) gratuitously jamming a character's powers to make writing the story easier.  I was thinking that the only way that this comic could get more "90's" is if Deadpool turned up when – waddayouknow?  The art's great though, and there are a couple of truly excellent panels – the first appearance of Hope for example.
If you think that comics reached their high point during the 90's then ignore all my carping – you will love this "mindless action movie" of a comic.  For the rest of us? It's like Ellis's run on Stormwatch never happened.
