Review: Clash of the Titans: The Videogame

The film version of Clash of the Titans might not be anything close to resembling a cinematic masterpiece, but it’s a mindlessly enjoyable bit of schlock featuring a mix-and-match of Greek myths, Sam Worthington doing his thing and normal-sized men going toe to toe with gigantic CGI monsters. It’s a silly, harmless piece of popcorn fluff. As for the game, you’d expect such a rich source of material to draw upon to be used to the absolute full, right? Punching colossal beasts in their colossal faces, right? Carving up ancient monsters with a digital Worthington, right? Er, no.

The plot of the game is fairly faithful to that of the film, as Perseus, the twice orphaned son of Zeus, ends up joining a load of soldiers in a quest to find a way to kill the unkillable Kraken. In between all the points of the film, though, you’ll find yourself doing other side quests for stupid support characters, like killing monsters, killing more monsters and – what was the other one, now? Ah yes – killing even more monsters. In spite of anything that could be done with such an exciting licence idea – epic RPG themed around Ancient Greece, anyone? – developers Game Republic have managed to do the impossible and make Greek myths boring.

Essentially, Clash of the Titans is a moronic hack ‘n’ slash that aims for the lowest common denominator in the gaming audience: the player who loves to press X repeatedly, without thinking of anything more complex than just pressing a single button over and over. If that sounds too harsh, consider this – the game comes with the helpful subtitle ‘The Videogame’, probably because otherwise the game’s target audience would get confused and think that the film was already out on some kind of special Xbox 360 DVD. The film might have been stupid, but at least it didn’t have to point out that it was a film in the opening titles. Unlike this game.
