An Interview with The Guild's Robin “Clara” Thorsen by Kelly Rowles

The Guild is the hit webseries about a group of online friends from an MMORPG who end up coming together in person after one of the members decides to cross the line and meet in real life. And of course, much hilarity ensues as a result. The show is now into season 3, and it's cast has become quite the draw at comic book, gaming, and sci-fi/fantasy conventions all over the country.

I recently had a chance to chat with The Guild's Robin Thorsen at the GameX video game expo and media convention in Philadelphia, which was held the weekend of October 23rd. Robin's character, “Clara,” is the lovable (but neglectful) mother in the Knights of Good guild, but probably one of the least geeky Guild cast member in real life.

Be sure to check out interviews with The Guild's Sandeep Parikh (Zaboo) and Jeff Lewis (Vork), who were also interviewed at GameX!

On with the interview!

Kelly Rowles: You guys have a couple of conventions under your belt now right?

Robin Thorsen: Mmm hmm.

KR: Some of the celebrities who routinely do fandom conventions get a lot of odd autograph requests. Have you guys gotten anything super weird yet, or has it all been pretty conventional thus far?

RT: I wish I could say I have, like, a crazy autograph [request], you know? But I know Felicia [Day] signed a baby! I know that. And I think Sandeep [Parikh] signed a boob? But I haven't had any crazy requests.

KR: No boobs yet, huh?

RT: You know, the day's still young. We'll see, we'll see. [laughs]

KR: How did you get involved with The Guild?

RT: I actually auditioned for the role. Vince [Caso] and Amy [Okuda] and myself, we all auditioned.

KR: You did a lot of theater in college. Is theater, the stage, more your medium?

RT: I love theater! I majored in theater. You can't really go wrong with theater for me. But I'm trying to focus on film and television right now. So, we'll see how that goes. So far it's going pretty good! [laughs]

KR: Do you have any upcoming projects or roles? Theater or otherwise?

RT: Actually, I did a small part in a film called Perfect Combination, and I think that's coming out in about a year or so.

KR: I have to ask, who do the kids [on The Guild] belong to? The ones that play your children on the show?

RT: The guy who plays my husband, Brett [Sheridan], his son [Blake] is the little boy. And then the two girls are friends of Felicia's.

KR: I figured they'd have to have been a friend's or somebody's kids.

RT: Yeah, especially when you know, they're going in cages and such.

KR: I was wondering, “who in the world would they get, who was willing to give their kids to the show”?

RT: It's funny though, because they were literally in that cage for like, a half a second. And the parents were standing right on the other side. And Felicia wasn't sure if they were going to be okay with them going in the cage and the parents were like “Oh yeah! Go ahead! Put 'em in!” They were laughing. It was funny.

KR: So I was watching some of the blooper reels from the past seasons, and I saw there was a scene where you were asking about what DPS was. I'm guessing you're not one of the [World of Warcraft] players?

RT: Noooo. No. No. How did you guess? [laughs] Yeah, I don't game. I mean, I game very little. But I don't play World of Warcraft.

KR: So being involved in The Guild hasn't piqued your interest, they didn't convince you at BlizzCon that you needed to start a character?

RT: It's so funny. When people usually ask that question, that's the last question they ask. They're like, “okay thanks!” But it's not that I don't like the game or anything, I've played a few times. I kinda have an addictive personality so I'm afraid that if I started I probably wouldn't be doing this interview right now. I'd be like, in my room I think. [laughs]

KR: If you had to rank your fellow actors from The Guild – who's the geekiest?

RT: The geekiest... Felicia. That's just hands down right there!

KR: So do you fall on the bottom as the least geeky?

RT: I would say yes. Maybe Amy. Amy's probably below me. But yeah, I'm kind of down there.

KR: What keeps you coming back to these fandom conventions?

RT: They're just, they're way fun to do! And I think the show has been so successful due to our fans. So why not give back and hang out and take some photos?

KR: Now that you guys are wrapping season 3, are you comfortable enough with your character where you can say to Felicia “You know I wonder if [Clara] would say or do this?” Or does Felicia pretty much write the whole thing and that's sort of... That?

RT: Felicia is really amazing in that she writes the show, and before we even film the start of the season we do a read through. And that gives us time to test the waters and stuff, and we're able to say, “well you know, maybe this line” and she'll write it down and then when we're filming, we'll do the first take that's exactly like the script, and then we can maybe try something else. She's really awesome like that. She's really amazing.

KR: Where do you guys stage all the shots, and sets? I mean, each one of you has the shot of you and your computer and your background. Are they all somebody's house?

RT: Yes! Tink's room and my room are Felicia's house. It's all in the family! No soundstages or anything like that. We're doing it old school.

KR: Hey, that's awesome. That's part of the charm of the show!

RT: Yeah, I think so! I think it's pretty fun.

KR: Well, that's it for my questions, thanks so much for doing this.

RT: No problem
