An Interview with The Guild's Jeff “Vork” Lewis by Kelly Rowles

The Guild is the hit webseries about a group of online friends from an MMORPG who end up coming together in person after one of the members decides to cross the line and meet in real life. And of course, much hilarity ensues as a result. The show is now into season 3, and it's cast has become quite the draw at comic book, gaming, and sci-fi/fantasy conventions all over the country.

I recently had a chance to chat with The Guild's Jeff Lewis at the GameX video game expo and media convention in Philadelphia, which was held the weekend of October 23rd. Lewis plays the guild's warrior, and former Guild Leader. He is also an alumni of the ACME Theater Group, and The Groundlings, and has appeared as a guest star in various television shows, which includes an upcoming spot in an episode of Glee.

Be sure to check out the interview with The Guild's Sandeep Parikh (Zaboo) which was posted earlier this week, and keep an eye out for the upcoming interview with Robin Thorsen (Clara), who were also interviewed at GameX!

On with the interview (and please excuse the little bit of “fan-girling” I did! I couldn't help it.).

Kelly Rowles: How did you get involved in The Guild?

Jeff Lewis: Felicia, and Sandeep and I were in an improv group called Being Humans a couple years ago. She wrote the part [of Vork] for me and [Zaboo] for Sandeep and just asked us if we would do the pilot, and that was it. Everyone else auditioned but we were pretty close for a few years.

KR: And so the rest is history?
JL: Yeah, exactly.

KR: Since you are the guild leader or, were the guild leader, for the group, if you could pick any character from The Guild to have as a real life guild leader, who would you want?
JL: Gosh, that's a good one. Everybody's so crazy. Now let me think about this. I think maybe Clara? Am I picking it as Vork?

KR: No, pick it as you, since you play World of Warcraft yourself!
JL: I would have Clara. She's really fun. I like her bubbly kind of thing, making the game kinda fun.
KR: What new projects and roles do you have coming up?
JL: I have a small part in, I dunno when this comes out, I have a small part on Glee.

KR: I thought I saw the episode listed as “Mashups” right? Did it already come out? I read your IMDB profile and that's what it listed. Hmm.
JL: Yeah, I watched “Mashup” and I wasn't in it.

KR: I didn't think so!
JL: And Felicia said to me “no one tweeted about it, that you were in it.” Cause when I did General Hospital she got hundreds [of tweets]. So nobody did, so that was sad. So I called and found out, my agent told me, it's this Wednesday.

KR: Ohhh, okay!
JL: An episode called “Wheels.”

KR: I happen to love Glee as well, I so will be watching!
JL: It's a small part, but I was happy to be in it. And we do an improv show every month too, Sandeep and Felicia and I, called Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em.

KR: So, I hear you're an alumni of the ACME Comedy Theater and The Groundlings, what is it about comedy that appeals so strong to you as an actor?
JL: I think, I don't know, when I was growing up people told me that I was kinda funny. I think it's the only thing that I know how to do. [laughs] I have no skills what-so-ever! And, it's the first time when I moved to [LA] and I did classes that I ever got any positive reinforcement for anything I ever did. [laughs] People actually said “that was good,” and I'd never heard that. So it sorta sticks in your brain like, “Oh, wow. I got compliments for the first time in my life, I better stick with this.”

KR:You've done a little bit of writing as well right?
JL: Yes.

KR: I read you had done some writing for television, and you have a screenplay?
JL: I've done freelance cartoon episodes over the years and a movie that I wrote that they shot two years ago that is still seeking distribution to this day, called For Christ's Sake. Very funny movie that I'm hoping will see the light of day soon.

KR: Now, you have a level 80 character [in World of Warcraft]..?
JL: Yeah.

KR: ...On the Alliance?
JL: Yeah, “Vork.”

KR: How often do you get to play?
JL: Depends on if my wife is home.

KR: [laughs]
JL: But yeah, I slowed down a little. I play now a lot because we got her a character, and she doesn't play it. It's a mage. Totally different than “Vork.” So I've got to dig back into addiction. I got off it.

KR: Actually, a mage is what I play!
JL: Yeah? It's totally different so I'm starting to play a lot again. But yeah, it goes up and down. You know, when you get to 80 you do a lot of stuff, you level off a little, addiction goes down a little. But I'm playing a lot. Pretty often. A couple times a week.

KR: You looking forward to the expansion coming out?
JL: I am! You mean Cataclysm?

KR: Yeah.
JL: Yeah, yeah. And I played a little at BlizzCon and it was pretty fun.

KR: You get to play the Worgen a little bit? I have to say I'm considering rerolling Alliance just to do it.
JL: Yeah, it was fun. I look forward to playing it in my house without a hundred people watching in the same area.

KR: I bet! Well, that's all the questions I've got, thank you so much doing the interview!
